Sublime > Poetry > Intro

Much Romantic poetry can be characterized as sublime. Poetry that attempts to instill in the reader overwhelming emotions, especially in contemplation of nature or the divine, is working from Burke’s notion of the aesthetic superiority of the sublime. Poetry that describes natural events or landscapes lends itself to sublime effects, as does tragic poetry.
