To receive a Ph.D. with a concentration in Women, Gender, and Literature,
students must fulfill coursework under three rubrics: concentration coursework
(18 hours), core coursework standard of all English students (18 hours),
and supporting work outside of the department (9 hours and foreign language
proficiency). Note that coursework in some areas may overlap, but no course
may satisfy more than two requirements in the concentration or the core.
Concentration coursework requirements:
18 hours (6 courses) minimum of courses in literature by women, or in
literature related to women and gender issues, offered in the Department
of English. 3 hours (one course) may be at the upper-division undergraduate
level.
Core coursework requirements:
E 384K Research Methods
3 hours medieval English literature/linguistics/rhetoric, or English language/Linguistics
3 hours literary or rhetorical theory
E 398T (Assistant Instructors only)
3 hours Qualifying Exam conference course
3 hours E 391L (Credit/No Credit) conference course to prepare for 3-area
dissertation prospectus exam
Supporting work outside the department:
9 hours (3 courses) outside of the department. These courses may be from
more than one department and 3 hours may be at the upper-division level.
